Crops, creeks and collies
An agricultural show opens a window onto growing produce, caring for environments and working with animals.

You came for the rides. So far, you’ve watched a working dog round up sheep, inspected a prize-winning pumpkin and eaten something on a stick.
There’s quite a lot going on at an agricultural show, and also a world of work behind what you’re seeing: growing produce, caring for the land and looking after animals. These activities give us a glimpse of the three work domains within Work Sync’s Nature work theme.
Behind the produce displays are people who spend their days growing things. They prepare soil, manage watering, watch for pests and decide when a crop is ready to harvest. Over in the livestock pavilion, a producer explains how they feed and care for their animals through different stages of growth. In Work Sync, these activities sit within the Agriculture work domain: growing plants and raising animals for food and other resources. This domain also includes nursery and greenhouse work, producing everything from vegetable seedlings to ornamental plants.
A little further along, a conservation group has photographs of a local creek, taken several years apart. Someone explains the work behind the change: removing invasive weeds, planting native vegetation and looking after the new growth so it can become established. These activities belong to the Environment work domain, where the focus is on protecting and maintaining habitats, landscapes and green spaces. The work can involve restoring bushland, monitoring trees or mowing and maintaining a park. Caring for the showground’s grounds and trees belongs here too.
Then the working-dog demonstration starts, and the crowd stops to watch.
Behind those quick responses to a whistle are many hours of training. The trainer develops the dog’s skills, reinforces behaviours and gradually introduces more demanding tasks. Elsewhere at the show, a veterinary professional examines an animal that needs attention.
These activities sit within the Animal Service work domain: caring for, training and supporting the health of animals. The domain also includes preparing food in a zoo, grooming dogs and caring for animals in a shelter.
Work Sync brings Agriculture, Environment and Animal Service together under the Nature work theme. They share an interest in working with living things and their surroundings, expressed through growing and producing, caring for environments, or supporting animals’ health and behaviour.
Some activities feature in more than one work domain. Caring for animals is part of both raising livestock and providing animal care services. Planting and tending new growth can help produce a crop or restore a habitat.
Those interests reach well beyond the showground – to farms and nurseries, parks and bushland, veterinary clinics and animal shelters.
You came for the rides. You’ve also had a glimpse of how many ways there are to put an interest in nature to work.
And seen a pumpkin that apparently needed its own trolley.
